  Thallus endolithic to epilithic, to c. 0.9 mm thick, grey to greyish brown, dull to slightly glossy, smooth, continuous to rimose-areolate, epruinose. Epinecral layer to c. 20 µm thick. Algal layer continuous, well developed; calcium oxalate crystals sparse, scattered, small to large. Vegetative propagules not seen. Ascomata conspicuous, blackish, to c. 1.8 mm diam., ±rounded, perithecioid, solitary, immersed. Disc not visible from above. Pores minute, to c. 0.1 mm diam., ±rounded; inner and apical proper exciple visible from above, free, black, epruinose. Thalline rim margin thin, ±rounded, concolorous with and having the same surface features as the thallus, immersed. Proper exciple free, thick, blackish brown, non-amyloid. Hymenium 100–140 µm thick, not inspersed, moderately conglutinated; lateral paraphyses conspicuous, to c. 30 µm long. Epihymenium hyaline to pale brown, egranulose. Asci (6–) 8-spored. Ascospores broadly ellipsoidal, with ±rounded ends, hyaline to brown, non-amyloid, 16–32 × 10–20 µm, with 3–6 × 1–4 locules; locules ±rounded to angular; septa thick, regular; ascospore wall thin to thick; endospore thick. Pycnidia not seen.
CHEMISTRY: Thallus K–, C– red, P–; no secondary metabolites detected by TLC.
     
  Occurs on exposed, siliceous rocks in semi-arid and arid regions of southern Australia (W.A., S.A., N.S.W. and Vic.); subcosmopolitan.
